Orchard Development Group

The Orchard Development Group (ODG) is a not-for-profit association working to encourage local communities, landowners and other organisations throughout the Scottish Borders to restore, promote and celebrate local orchards, ecologies and culture.

The group has considerable knowledge and experience to share, and is aiming to develop a critical mass of people interested in re-invigorating the long heritage of orchards in the Borders.

Whether you have orchard experience, are looking to gain some, or just want to be involved in a great community experience, we'd like to hear from you.

Our 'model' project is Crailing Community Orchard, at Crailing near Jedburgh. We usually hold work days there on the first Sunday of every month, 11.00-16.00; why not come, and find out more then? Bring food for a picnic; we sometimes have a barbecue.

The Orchard lies just south of the A698 Kelso-Jedburgh road, between Crailing village and the B6400 junction to Nisbet, at OS grid reference NT686244 (GPS WGS84 coordinates: 55° 30' 46" N, 2° 29' 55" W). Turn into the minor road opposite the turning to Crailing Kirk, and park in the layby; the entrance is just a bit further down the road.

Stop Press: Langlee Planting Day

Langlee Community Orchard are holding a Planting Day on Saturday 29th October, from 11.00 - 14.00.

There's more than 50 trees to plant, so loads of help will be needed from community groups and individuals.

If you want to help or would like further information, contact Bob Petrie at Langlee Centre on 01896 755110 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

"The social working of orchards ... the need for many hands at harvest time ... and the seasonal celebrations which punctuate the orchard calendar have fostered the evolution of songs, recipes and traditions ... "     (from the Common Ground Book of Orchards).
